This week, industry leaders Sim Local and Lyca Mobile announced they partnered-up to bring more choice and flexibility to eSIM users in Portugal.
Sim Local will bring the British mobile operator’s new plans onto its digital platform, providing high data plans in Portugal that will be offered via regional eSIM options.
The partnership with Sim Local represents the first e-commerce retail partnership outside its own direct-to-consumer business. Lyca’s data plans will also be offered as a regional eSIM option in the UK, France, Ireland, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the US, according to a press release from the company.
The mobile space in Portugal continues to be in the news, with MEO, part of the Altice Group and formerly Portugal Telecom, recently signing a multi-year contract with Nokia to modernize the operator’s infrastructure and upgrade its 5G. The number of mobile internet users in Portugal is forecast to continuously increase between 2024 and 2029, by close to a million users.
Lyca Mobile is one of the world’s largest mobile virtual network operator, operating in 23 countries. It is also one of the market leaders in the international prepaid mobile calls market, with over 16 million customers worldwide.
Sim Local caters to global travelers and allows them to avoid expensive roaming charges. The company sells SIM cards and downloadable eSIMs direct to customers through Sim Local retail stores, kiosks, vending machines, its mobile application, and through its online store.
